4th Octet

Same leadership. Extended capability.

4th Octet is Brian Kennedy's engineering and managed services practice. Implementation, day-to-day operations, and ongoing management for enterprise networks — delivered by the same architect who designed them.

Kennedy Consulting handles architecture, advisory, and design. 4th Octet handles everything that comes after: implementation, ongoing operations, managed services, and the day-to-day work of running a production network.

The two practices share a founder, leadership, technical bench, and quality bar. They exist as separate entities because the commercial models, engagement cadences, and operational rhythms are different. They are not separate teams. When a Kennedy Consulting engagement flows into 4th Octet, the technical leadership stays the same. You don't get handed off to a different team after the design is signed off; you get the same architect overseeing implementation and operations.

The key principle: Engaging 4th Octet doesn't dilute the principal involvement. Brian remains the technical lead on every engagement. 4th Octet is what extends his reach into the work that has to happen every day, not just at the design table.

01 — What 4th Octet Does

Four core capabilities.

All under Brian's technical leadership, executed by a principal engineering team built around the work.

Managed Services and Day-to-Day Operations

Ongoing operations for enterprise networks: 24x7 monitoring, incident response, change management, configuration governance, lifecycle tracking, vendor coordination, and the steady-state operational work that keeps a network running well. For organizations that want the team that designed the network to also be the team that runs it.

Implementation and Engineering Delivery

Implementation of architecture designed by Kennedy Consulting or by another advisory firm. Datacenter buildouts (active/active, multi-pod), segmentation rollouts, refresh projects, wireless deployments, SD-WAN engineering, and the migrations between legacy and modern architectures that most network teams don't have spare bandwidth for.

Project and Program Management

For multi-phase modernization programs that need someone to keep the work moving: vendor coordination, milestone tracking, stakeholder communication, dependency management across IT, facilities, and security workstreams. Often paired with an active implementation engagement.

Principal On-Demand Engineering

For organizations that need principal engineering capacity without hiring full-time. Sized to the work: an hour a week, a few days a month, or full-time embedded for a quarter. Same principal people, scoped to your need.

02 — How KC and 4th Octet Fit Together

Architecture, delivery, and operations — under one roof.

The two practices are designed to work together when the client wants them to:

Kennedy Consulting produces the architecture, the assessment, and the modernization roadmap.

4th Octet implements it, operates it, and keeps it running well.

Brian Kennedy stays the technical lead across both. Same architect, same accountability, no handoff.

For organizations that have their own implementation team or a separate implementer, this works too. Kennedy Consulting will work with whoever is delivering. 4th Octet doesn't require a Kennedy Consulting engagement, and a Kennedy Consulting engagement doesn't require 4th Octet. The two practices are designed to flow into each other when it makes sense, but they stand independently when it doesn't.

Engagement model. 4th Octet operates as a separate engineering and managed services firm with its own commercial structure, its own SLAs, and its own operations practice. Managed services run on annual contracts. Implementation work runs as scoped projects with fixed scope and timeline. On-demand engineering runs on retainers sized to the work.
